Mourning the end of WESTLIFE? – Not Me!

After 12 years at the top of their game WESTLIFE have at last bit the bullet and done the decent thing and they are splitting up… Shame…

Shame being that they didn’t do what Take That did when Robbie left and fold a few months after Brian McFadden walked out in 2004.

But No!! on the marched amassing an amazing & unworthy 14 UK No.1’s for the Ultimate Boy Bland!!

It seems such a shame that such a none entity in musical terms, should have such a bearing on our chart history… I know parts of our chart history haven’t been all good… No.1’s like Mr Blobby and the Teletubbies… Hey Ho, they were just blips on the landscape and no long term effect like WESTLIFE did.

It’s not that I’m dissing all boy bands… I quite like Take That and even went to see them this Summer and WESTLIFE weren’t all bad… I think I’ve been drawn in, to sing along with the chorus of ‘World of or Own’ when it’s been on the radio… but at least that was an upbeat tune and not one of their awful dirge covers!!

They were a cliché, ooh it’s time to get off my stool for the key change…

Can someone please tell me what the appeal was that made WESTLIFE such a phenomenon?

were they talented at vocal harmonies (maybe) exceptional singers (not really) really fit (from a female perspective) I can’t see it myself in comparison to some other boy bands…

They (as I said before) are (were) the Ultimate Boy Bland!!

Anyway as one door closes another one opens… as WESTLIFE depart, STEPS are on the come back trail… currently No.1 in the album charts ** hangs head and shakes it**

But all is not lost... don’t worry you WESTLIFE Fans they'll be back in a few years for a reunion tour and Brian might even come out of the woodwork…

While making a purchase on Ebay this morning, I spotted this...

An early CD Version of the well established 'NOW MUSIC' Compilation Series.

At the time of this being posted it was up to £206 with a couple of days to go...

I can only assume that this must have been the first NOW album to be released in a CD Format and only in a short run as 1984/5 was still early for CD's.

The first NOW album on vinyl is available for a Tenner + P&P. I have a copy of that... but obviously that doesn't have the pulling power of the early CD release...

My advice is to head off to your CD cupboard or that box in the loft and check if you have any NOW CD's before NOW 10 they seem to be pulling in some money... very likely from collectors who are trying to complete the whole NOW Series which this Christmas will hit the NOW 80 edition.

If you’re celebrating your 40^th Birthday in August it was a month where Diana Ross topped her only UK chart of the decade with "I'm Still Waiting", This song originally flopped in the US but proved very successful in the UK.

For our younger followers who happen to be celebrating their 21st birthday we go back to the year 1990 where "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny" by Bombalurina was number one in August, this song was given a makeover by Children s TV presenter Timmy Mallet. Enjoy..

And finally if your celebrating your 18th birthday then in August 1993 the song "Living On My Own" was a song sung by Queen front man Freddie Mercury, it was originally a minor hit in 1985 but was re-mixed and gave Freddie his only solo chart topper 20 months after his death.

Milestone Birthday in June 2011?

Well this is the month I was born... I see myself as a true Gemini... very quiet an shy when in a small group, but prepared to get on the mic to sing karaoke to a room full of people or man the decks and do a bit of good old fashioned party dj'ing.

If you're celebrating a milestone birthday in June here are some of the tunes that were topping the charts in years gone by.

50th Birthday - Early in the month it's an Elvis No.1 again as he continues to dominate the charts in 1961 'Surrender' becomes Elvis's 3rd of 4 No.1's in 1961.

Del Shannon took over the No.1 spot from June 24th but we'll save that one for the month of July.

40th Birthday - a 70's child popping out to the sound of a couple of 70's cheesey classics the opening 2 weeks are the hang over of DAWN and 'Knock Three Times' - (Check out May's Milestone Birthdays for the video for this song) from the 14th it was MIDDLE OF THE ROAD with 'Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep'

Featuring Sally Carr on vocals who was thought to have the best legs in pop way back in 1971. what do you think?

21st Birthday - A busy month at the No.1 spot in June 1990... 'Killer' by ADAMSKI sneaked in a couple of days at the start, then the World Cup Fever of 'Italia 90' kicks in when New Order and England had the 'World In Motion' with probably one of the best football songs, although it did feature one of the worst raps of all-time (sorry Barnesy)

Elton John hit the top spot on the 18th June 1991 with his 1st UK Solo No.1 with the double 'A' Side 'Sacrifice/Healing Hands' where it stayed for 4 weeks.

Oh & just in case you were wondering... which you probably weren't :) The No.1 on the day I was born was Elvis again with 'Good Luck Charm' quite a suitable tune.

One of the omens that football fans may not have been aware of during the run in to this years FA Cup Final was that it was 50 years since The Marcels were at No.1 with Blue Moon, Which of course is an anthem of the Manchester City fans. Other No.1 ones during May 1961 were the fantastic instrumental by Floyd Cramer called 'On The Rebound' and the 1st No.1 hit to be produced by the 5th Beatle George Martin...

CELEBRATING YOUR 40th?

Well there are 2 No.1's from May 1971 - early in the month it was the song that started with the line... "I Am The Magnificent!" then, well I'm not really what he says after that :) But it was Double Barrel By Dave and Ansil Collins, then the remainder of the month it was a slice of pure American pop with DAWN and 'Knock Three Times'...

If you're celebrating a 21st birthday during May we go back to the Spring of 1990 Madonna and 'Vogue' was still hanging on in there, but it was a great track by Adamski that dominated the month at No.1 from 6th may onwards and a song that featured the soulful vocals of Sealhenry Samuel AKA Seal and the tune of course was 'KILLER'.

And finally if it's an 18th that's being celebrated, we've got a bit of an old skool club classic and the cover version of an old KC & The Sunshine Band hit originally from the 70's (what do you mean it was a cover version I hear you say) 'Please Don't Go!' which was a double AA Side... with Game Boy

4th March - Stoke League Cup Win Anniversary

From my BNI Minute this morning...

Well what a special day this is...

The No.1 Song in 1972 was 'Son Of My Father' by Chicory Tip... No 5 on the chart was Chelsea's 'Blue Is The Colour' with Stoke City's triumphant anthem 'We'll Be With You' trailing back @ No.34.

Although the Londoners wone the battle of the Charts, it was the plucky potters who won the hearts as they returned to Staffordshire with the Silverware in hand.

Stoke City - Soccer Sight

This is a thank you email which was sent to Stoke City to thank the Soccer Sight Team, who supply football commentary to the blind and partially sighted supporters at the Britannia Stadium...

Good afternoon

I have been to many games at Brighton & Hove Albion using their soccer sight radio transmissions. I have been to only a few away games because the system isn’t widely used.

I went to Watford FC for the 4th round of the F.A cup and they had it there, I used it and enjoyed the game, I have a little sight so can only see some movement. Their soccer sight was transmitted from the Hospital radio studio, it had about 4 people involved but was a bit disappointing as it wasn’t a neutral commentary and continually remarked on how Watford were doing.

On my visit to Stoke I was welcomed with a smile, I was even introduced to one of the players. I was kept in a warm place and not forgotten. I was also told that someone would take us to our sets and provisions made for half time refreshments etc. I was given a radio and off I went.

The scene was set before the game by someone telling me on the soccer sight transmission information from the program, something I don’t get at the Albion, it was much appreciated. They said welcome to us, that probably meant me.

The game started and it was full on stuff I can tell you, the commentary was clear and un-bias and at half time punditry was given,

The chaps were very excited through the whole game and even when the Albion nearly scored they sounded like they supported us.

All in all it was a very enjoyable commentary except for the score.

Thank you and I wish Stoke City all the best for the future with the soccer sight and for the future of the club.

40 years ago today Clive Dunn (of Dads Army fame) was No.1 with Grandad & in 1974 Slade were still at No1 with Merry Xmas Everybody.

But I don't want to be looking back to the past today I want to be looking 1 nth into the future to Valentines Day.

So for the next month I will be looking for lovers, newlyweds & couples Who have a special song or perhaps their wedding 1st dance that they would like to commemorate with one of our lovely framed disc presentations.

Who (at 68) became the oldest entrant in the 'Velux 5 Oceans' and finished fourth, proving you're never to old to do what you want to do...

Answer IT - Facebook Ads - Buyer Beware

Initially this was going to be a real onslaught on Answer-IT, but as they have refunded my 2nd months payment I will just offer this post as a...

BUYER BEWARE!!!

Early in December I was approached by Answer IT to run some Facebook Advertising... firstly I feel I was mis-sold to by the tele-sales operative who suggested that a company in my market 'Music Memorabilia' had received 800k impressions with 22k CTR nearly 3% in a month so I thought on the run in to Christmas it was worth a punt.

A couple of days later a member of their team rang back and discussed the account and the Ad... I mentioned the claims that the tele-sales operative had made and he said that seemed unlikely but he would check and get back to me (which he never did of course) though he did inform me that prior to the end of the month they would send me all the stats and then I could make my mind up whether to continue with this £200 a month service. and if not I could cancel no problem.

I didn't receive the stats as promised so I tried to send an email to cancel - no response... on the 4th Jan they took a second months payment.

There are no contact No's on the website - the Contact form is not working and no-one is responding to emails.

Following a random phone call from Tony @ auto-unique who was experiencing the same problem. He had been chasing them due the fact that they didn't send his end of month stats and missed the rollover of the month, he only realised when he had been charged for a 2nd month. When he chased them he got my stats by mistake, so he rang me to see how my dealings with Answer IT had gone.

We shared our stories and he gave me the No. of the senior manager so I chased 4 times in the space of 2 1/2 hours to catch this man until they finally put me through to him.

Although feeling I was definitely mis-sold to in the first instance and should have pushed for a full refund, I was happy to get (as yet only promised) my 2nd months payment back. I suppose I'll chalk this one off to experience and in the words of The Who 'I Won't Get Fooled Again'

He tried to offer me a further month at no further charge beyond the 2nd payment, making it 12 weeks at a cost of £466. inc VAT Then after the initial 3 months they would be happy to continue our agreement at £99 a month...

Very decent of them.... (NOT!!)

Points to Note

Answer IT's figures for my 1st month were approx
421k impressions
273 CTR = around 0.065%
average cost ppc -£0.85

A campaign run by myself for Father Day 2010
had the following figures
1.181m impressions
477CTR = around 0.04%
average cost ppc - $0.19 = £0.12

So I affectively paid them £200 for 15 minutes to set-up the ad, which is all it takes...

if you are approached by (or even if you've signed up to working with) Answer IT, here are a few suggestions...

If I've caught you before you've signed up. DON'T DO IT!!!

1. Ask what they would estimate your - impressions v CTR v PPC would be for the 1st month.

if they state something ridiculous like 800k impressions to a click through rate of more than 1% ie 8,000 then they are lying.

Even the manager when I pressed him said a CTR of anything more than 1% is very unlikely and that my 0.05% was a good CTR (but he would wouldn't he!).

2. Ask them if they have any customers that you could speak to before committing to signing up
(note the testimonial for Alex Smith on the site is a fake, the company listed are in Spain and they've never heard of Alex Smith or advertised on Facebook - try to find them on google!) the link to more testimonials is broken.

3. Make sure you get the names, No's and Emails of all the people you speak to.

4. They will say that they are affiliated with Facebook... ask them if there is anyway they can clarify this... perhaps via email so you have a physical copy of their claim....

5. Set up your own Facebook ad and run it for a month, see how much it costs you and the impressions v CTR v PPC.

I would estimate that it would come in well below the £200 mark dependent on the saturation of your market (which will affect the PPC rate)

If You've already bitten the bullet... it may be too late but...

1. Ensure you leave yourself a reminder one week before the end of the month to chase up your stats.

2. Ask if you can change your ad and include an offer code so you can trace any sales generated by the Ad.

3. If you don't feel it is working for you pull the plug before the month rolls over.

4. Once the first month rolls over then you have to give 30 days written notice which of course will mean the 30 days will push you into month 3 - terrible malpractice in my eyes.

I hope this well help some businesses out there not to be hoodwinked like I was and I'm usually quite net savvy... Doh!!

It's A New Dawn, It's A New Day....

And as always I'm feeling good...

Being a glass half full kinda guy, I'm pretty positive most of the time, but as we head into a new year and indeed a new decade it's time to turn my positivity into more positive action.

This is not so much a resolution as a determination to push the business on this year... far too much time spent previously working steadily within the business, now it's time to push on and invest in a year of marketing to see how far I can take the business.

Step one has already begun and I have started a monthly direct marketing campaign.

The next step was completed just before Christmas and I joined the BNI, I am also planning to join 4N too and get out of the office at least 2 or 3 mornings a week to attend these networking events.

I'm also planning to get out on the road to visit some of my JV partners in the early months of 2011.

I have a number of other things planned including launching (eventually) the New Gold Disc website and possibly a new line and a website by August time.

I'm also coming back to the Social Media arena... more blogging, tweeting, FB and possibly a bit of Podcasting too.

Ooh A Little Bit of Politics as Ben used to say...

While walking down the street one day a "Member of Parliament" is tragically hit by a truck and dies.

His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

'Welcome to heaven, ' says St. Peter. ' Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you. '

' No problem, just let me in, ' says the man.

' Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity. '

' Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,' says the MP.

' I'm sorry, but we have our rules. '

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people.

They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne.

Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly & nice guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises....

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him.

' Now it's time to visit heaven. '

So, 24 hours pass with the MP joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

' Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity. '

The MP reflects for a minute, then he answers: ' Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell. '

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.

Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage.

He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above.

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. ' I don't understand, ' stammers the MP. ' Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable.

Well another month moves on, so we rapidly approach the 1st Sunday of the month which means my sit-in spot on BBC Radio Stoke ;).

Each month I come up with a theme and for an hour we play songs and artists linked to this theme. In the past we have done songs for Twitter, The Credit Crunch & last month it was Jobs and occupations...

As I have just started broadcasting on Ace Radio every Monday 10-midnight and the big film of the moment is 'The Boat That Rocked' I thought it would be a good idea to have Radio as the theme this month.

As some of you will already know the 1st Sunday of the Month is my appearance on BC Radio Stoke. I sit in with the presenter Terry Walsh between 1 - 2pm.

Gold Star for Dave as disc dream takes off

Here's some coverage on our nomination as a finalist in the Sentinel Small Business Award 2008

NOW it has finally got moving, The Gold Disc.com looks destined to be a real chart topper.

But its story is hardly one of overnight success, and founder Dave Breese admits to having had the idea "in my head" for the best part of six years before taking the plunge.

That was in 2002 and in the early days the going was tough, but in the past year – following a couple of big breakthrough orders – he has doubled his sales.

The concept revolves around tastefully framed gold (and now silver and platinum, too) discs as presentation mementoes of important events and achievements.

And he could be on the way to a souvenir of his own with The Gold Disc shortlisted as a finalist in The Sentinel's Business Initiative-sponsored Small Business of the Year Award.

Mr Breese said: "The 50th anniversary of the UK charts in 2002 was the spur for me to get the business going, and I started part-time with a good friend giving it a daytime presence while I was at work.

"The momentous leap forward came last year with the development of the Gold Disc nano – trade price around £20 per unit – which won us orders for 1,100 and 850 respectively from concert specialists Live Nation, to mark the Osmonds' 50th anniversary tour and the Boyzone Comeback Tour."

A previous turning point had come in 2003 when the company thought it had won a major contract to supply the Gadget Shop, but the retailer then ceased trading.

Determined to recover from that heart-breaker, Mr Breese had kept trying and slowly established some high profile, if not high volume, customers.

He said: "In the corporate sector our discs are frequently used as business awards, along with one being created for every inductee into the UK Music Hall of fame.

"And we have produced framed presentations for musicians and road crew involved in world tours by the likes of Mark Knopfler, Roger Waters and Depeche Mode through their management company."

But as well as discs sold to both the public – through www.thegolddisc.com – and corporate buyers, the company has diversified into free podcasting, offering musical inspiration at www.ourfirstdance.co.uk for couples looking for the perfect song to perform their first post-wedding dance to, which often leads them to the company's range of wedding discs.

If you're a regular internet user or a listener to the radio you'll probably have heard about people all over the world 'Tweeting on Twitter!' Not just your average joe but the great and mighty from Obama & No.10 to radio stations and personalities.

Twitter is the current big thing in social media it is a micro blogging platform where you can update your status to tell the world what you're up to in 140 characters or less.

It took me a while to get into the idea of Twitter... I didn't want to be telling people about what I was having for my lunch or my toilet habits... so I've aligned my Tweets mostly to the business and a little bit of engagement in the Twitter conversation.

Popmaster Champions League Questions (at last!)

At long last I’ve got around to listening again to my appearance on Radio 2’s Champions League Popmaster from Christmas 2008. I had promised to post the questions, and I finally got around to it.

The scoring in the Champions League runs from 1 point for question 1 through to 10 Points for the 10^th question I think you get the gist!!!???

I scored 29 points out of a possible 55. I went on a run of 1 – 6 correct then slipped up on questions 7 – 9 & 10 dropping 26 points in the process.

Is radio the new Rock n' Roll… again?

Radio is certainly coming to the fore over the next few weeks… ITV 2 will be showing a brand new six part comedy called FM based in guess what… a Radio Station!!

The main stars of the Show are Chris O’Dowd (no relation to George… I don't think!) and Kevin Bishop from Star Stories. Certainly seems worth a watch if you’re into music and radio.

The first episode airs on Wednesday 25th Feb.

Radio moves to the big screen in the shape of ‘THE BOAT THAT ROCKED’ a British comedy film celebrating the golden days of 60’s pirate radio.

This is a Richard Curtis film… a man with a pedigree if you like your British comedies… Remember any of these cinematic gems? Notting Hill, Four Weddings & Love Actually... He was behind all of these films, so you’re pretty much guaranteed a gentle, mildly amusing feel good movie with some great tunes from the mid 60’s.

If you want to hear a little more from a man who was there originally tune in to Pirate Johnnie Walker on Radio 2 Saturday nights between 9 -11pm. Johnnie was of course a member of the Radio Caroline crew.

I love radio myself… it keeps me going in my working day, I used to be a Hospital Radio DJ for the best part of 15 years of & on.

I am fortunate that through a mix of my music knowledge, my Ozzy Radio experience and my business, I have a sit in spot on BBC Radio Stoke the first Sunday of each month, next session being on Sunday March 1st @ 1pm.

A couple of old friends from my Hospital (Forward) Radio days are setting up an internet radio station called ACE Radio which is due to go live in April 09.

I’m sure I’ll turn up on air at some stage and that many other old Forward Radio presenters will be joining the ranks there.

I'll keep you informed as to when ACE Radio goes live.

Sentinel Small Business of the Year Award 2008

Wow!!! Great news from here at Moose Towers, The Gold Disc HQ.

We have been shortlisted to the final 3 of the Sentinel Business of the Year for 2008.

Over the next couple of weeks we will receive a visit from a film crew to video behind the scenes of the Gold Disc for the Awards ceremony at the end of March.

I have to admit I'm quite excited by the prospect.

Well I received my call from Radio 2 to ask if I was available to take my place in the final stages of the Champions League Popmaster on Radio 2's Ken Bruce show.

The Champions League will take place between December 8th - 18th with the final head to head taking place on Friday 19th December.

Hello and Welcome

I listen to Business podcasts on marketing and podcasting and they all seem to suggest that you should have a BLOG... so here it is....

The first edition of THE GOLD DISC Blog.

Just a quick introduction to myself and my business.

My name is David Breese (AKA Moose)

I have been running my business since 2002 and have been full time since Oct 03.

The business is a music based gift company, We create replica Gold Discs for a Birthday No.1 or a Wedding First Dance... it's an ideal gift for all ocassions.

We also have quite a few corporate customers who we supply unique awards to.

We sell our discs through our own website The Gold Disc also Our First Dance.

Obviously as a small biz I am almost always busy so it may be and infrequent blogspot... but I'll try to keep it up to date and keep you informed what is happening with the biz and the Moose.
